This is the not so delightful color that our front doors have been for the past year and a half.

And the outside view.
If you look at the following, you’ll see where I’m headed.

It took a long time for me to get brave enough to do this. For some reason, even though we built the entire house, made all the decisions (including all of the paint colors and doing all of the painting ourselves), I found this choice very difficult- rivaled only by my agony in choosing kitchen cupboards.
Even after I had found the perfect paint and the perfect color, I was still nervous about doing it.
It’s the front of our house, for pete’s sake!
Here’s how it turned out…
I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Primer Red. It took 3 coats to get full coverage but it still only took barely over a quart of paint to get both doors, both sides, painted.
See the complete patio makeover here.
We love it! What color is your front door?

I love it! We just built a house too and I chose “Pompeii Red” for our front door. I was so nervous but I absolutely love how it turned out! You can see ours here: http://www.thehappierhomemaker.com/2012/05/home-tour-exterior.html?m=1

What a lovely front entry! The red is perfect. I have a red front door, too, but I want to change it. Nothing wrong with it–just want something different after 10 years! I can’t decide on a colour, though.

It is so much fun and can change the look of your house drastically! Let me know what color you go for!

I love a red door! You’ll have to let me know how the ASCP holds up on the door…I’m going to paint my front door yellow and hadn’t thought to use it. The minimal prep of her paint is right up my alley.
June 4th, 2012 at 9:13 pm
It was so easy to do. I hope it holds up; we still need to put a sealer on it so that it doesn’t scratch. It should be ok!!

Your house looks amazing already, but the red door really take it to the next level. Looks awesome! I’ve been dreaming of painting my front door but I have an ugly screen door in front it. I need to figure out what to do with that eyesore first. Thanks so much for sharing at Etcetorize this week!

My door is just a plain white door with a peep hole. Nothing fancy or as nice as yours. I am too old far making big changes. I like what you did.

I LOVE IT!! Ok, I just placed my first order for some ASCP and can’t wait to get started on some projects. Did you use wax on the front door to seal it?? And was a quart really enough for 2 doors fronts and backs?? Thanks!! PS I’m a new follower
June 10th, 2012 at 9:00 am
It took a little over a quart, but yes, not very darn much!! I didn’t use wax to seal. I haven’t sealed yet, but I’ll use an outdoor poly to seal it up tight. That’s what they recommend. Thanks for following!!

Thanks Carol! I’m usually a pretty neutral girl, but I think doors deserve some color!!

This is so pretty — I’ve never thought of using the chalk paint. Just curious why you chose chalk paint — is the door metal or wood? What type of sealer are you going to use?
June 10th, 2012 at 8:57 am
I love using chalk paint because it is so easy to work with and I love that particular color. I haven’t sealed them yet, but probably any outdoor sealer will work. Thanks for stopping by!!

Fabulous color! It looks amazing

Hi, I love your red door. My front door currently has about five coats of an enamel red on it, which has been there for ten years. It took about five coats to cover it. And the paint is peeling. I am wanting to paint it…I like your idea of the chalk paint. Did you eventually seal it, and if so what did you use as a sealer? I know that I have read not use wax on exterior projects done with chalk paint. Please let me know about your finish and how the door is holding up to the elements.

Hi Iva,
Sorry it took so long to reply… I have not yet sealed it, but was going to use regular outdoor sealer for doors over top. Wish I had earlier. The winter has scratched up the paint- not surprising since it is chalk paint. Other than that- they are holding up great.
